Lagos Life Add Friends and Chat: How the Shared City Works

Lagos Life is one shared city with real players in it, not a private save file, and any player can message you. There is no friend code: you meet someone, knock on their door, talk in a thread only the two of you can see, and the relationship climbs through tiers that gate everything deeper. Chat is also the heaviest thing the server does, which is why it lags.

One city, and a creator who promised friends on day one

The game's own description sells the friendship before the platform: "A Sims-style life game set in Lagos... and make real friends." The live world board on the homepage is the proof — account handles with a status beside each, green dot for online or a house for at home, and a home entry explaining what a knock is for: "Sign up to knock, watch Nollywood, share jollof or play Whot! together." That is a directory of strangers, not a friends list.

Official source: lagoslife.app — homepage checked live on 2026-10-06. It also carries a banner naming the city's virtual governor, an elected player account rather than staff.

That framing is the creator's. Shalom Rayhamen launched Lagos Life on 1 October 2026 with a post that never mentions jobs, property or money. It ends: "Take a look around. Who knows, you might make a new friend in the Sims world." Hours later, five words: "I have 4 neighbors now." Friends were the pitch from the first post, not bolted on after growth.

How friendship works: the relationship ladder

Every player-to-player action runs through one hidden number, and the game tells you where you stand. At the door the wording changes: "You haven't met before" below zero, "Someone you've met" above it, "Your padi wants to come in" at 30 — the padi line, where a stranger becomes someone who knocks. Options are gated on it:

Action Unlocks when Moves the score Cost
Say Hello 👋 always, but only offered up to 10 +6 10 min, +10 social
Gist 💬 −20 or higher +7 25 min, +18 social
Crack Joke 😂 0 or higher +10, or −5 if it lands flat 15 min, 55% to land
Hype Them Up 🙌 5 or higher +9 15 min, 80% to land
Talk About Life 🌙 25 or higher +12 40 min, +24 social
Hang Out 🍹 30 or higher +14 60 min, +30 social
Hug 🤗 40 or higher +8, or −4 if refused 10 min, 90% to land
Flirt 😘 30 or higher +12, or −8 if refused 15 min, 50% to land
Ask for Small Money 🙏 50 or higher −12 15 min, 60% to land
Throw Shade 😒 always −15 10 min

Two details catch people out: Say Hello is the only action with an upper limit — past 10 it vanishes, because the game assumes you have moved past introductions. And asking a close friend for money scores as a negative interaction.

What opens up once you are friends

What How it works
Knock You knock, they get a prompt, if they open you walk in. A house chat starts with everyone under that roof, and the host can open their kitchen — you cook with your own groceries. Every home has a guest ceiling.
Squads A named group: "add them by username, chat together and plan Quilox nights." An invite lands in that person's messages and they join with one tap, up to 50 people. Members agree on a plan and get pinged when it is time to head out.
Party mode Throw a party and online friends get the invite — the cheapest way to spend a Fun bar, tracking the weekly policy rotation.

There is a long-term version: move into someone's home and the game says "no knocking, beds, kitchen and shower are yours too. They pay the rent; you can chip in." You keep your own key, which splits the Saturday bill — see rent is due every Saturday.

Direct messages are private — and moderated

The one-to-one thread screen is labelled "Real player · only you two can see this." Contacts are not handed to you either; the empty state reads "Meet people around town to save their numbers." Nobody can thread you until the game counts you as having met.

Private is not unmoderated. The report dialog says: "Your recent chat with them is shared with the Lagos Life team, and they'll be blocked." Blocking is silent too: "They won't be able to message you, interact with you or knock on your door... They aren't told."

Chat is private, but it is not anonymous

The operator reads recent chat when a thread is reported, and the terms ban cheating, exploiting bugs and harassment. Do not move money to someone you met in a chat thread, and the terms say in-game naira has no real-world value and cannot be cashed out.

Why the game stutters when everyone is chatting

The best-documented explanation is not official, but it is specific and dated. On 2 October 2026 at 8:35 AM, developer Favour Yusuf argued on X that the bottleneck is bandwidth, and specifically chat: "Every new player can chat with every existing player, and the problem with chat is that it requires every piece of chat data to be stored, irrespective of how long the history is. Scale that over 1000+ users actively chatting and I'm not surprised at the lags." It had 51.1K views when we checked on 2026-10-06.

The shipped client backs that from its own side. Threads are paginated — there is a "Load earlier messages" button, the behaviour of a system that keeps history rather than dropping it. And polling stretches as load rises: an active thread is checked every 5, 8, 12 or 20 seconds depending on server load, the heavier refresh from 30 seconds to two minutes. The game slows its own message refresh on purpose, so late messages at peak time are the server protecting itself, not your phone.

A player analysis, not a developer statement

Lagos Life publishes no changelog, status page or FAQ — /news, /updates, /blog, /faq and /guide all return 404 — so there is no official version of this story. Treat it as the best available explanation, not a confirmed cause.

If messages feel late, restarting your browser does not change the queue. Use the lag fixes.

For scale: the official public stats endpoint reported 53,610 players online and 2,113,266 registered at 01:40 UTC on 2026-10-06. That online figure is a snapshot — it moved by more than 40,000 in twenty minutes during our own checks that day. The methodology, and a known conflict between two official counters, is on player count and live stats.

Check the domain, and what we have not verified

The only official addresses are lagoslife.app and its mirror lagoslife.eliysites.com. lagoslife.com and lagos.life are parked and listed for sale — not the game today, and whoever buys them tomorrow decides what they serve. Confirm the domain before you sign in; the official link guide has the rest.

Beyond that, we publish no click-by-click menu walkthrough, because we have not signed in to film one. Every label, gate and number above was read from the browser build the official site was serving on 2026-10-06, and the developer ships changes with no version notes — so treat the labels as current-as-of. If your screen reads differently, the build moved. Start here if you are new.

FAQ

Do I need a friend code? Not in the build we read. You connect from the live world board, by knocking on a door once you have met, or by inviting a username into a squad.

Is chat private in Lagos Life? Private between the two of you. Not private from the operator — a report shares your recent chat with the Lagos Life team.

Why is Lagos Life lagging? The documented explanation, from a player not the developer, is that chat history is stored permanently and every new account can message every existing one, so bandwidth grows with the player base.
